Portsmouth Football Club History
John Deacon became chairman in 1972, bringing with him some much needed financing, but the extra cash didn’t help much. With funds running increasingly low Portsmouth were relegated back to the third division in 1976. With threats of bankruptcy and the sale of players the only way to keep the club from going under, the inevitable happened in 1978 when the team were sent to the fourth division.
It wasn’t until 1980 that Portsmouth re-found some of their previous form and arrived back in the third division, and then at the end of the 1982 / 1983 season were promoted to the second division. The 1986 / 1987 season saw a brief return to division one before immediate relegation once again, and the club was sold to Jim Gregory in 1988. |
